Steadfast

Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever!

I’VE KEPT A JOURNAL for as long as I can remember, documenting passages of Scripture that I’m reading and life events that arise. Some days I write more, others less. One morning as I spent my quiet time with the Lord, I looked back to the year before. It had been challenging, and I wanted to remember all that had happened. That year my journal had become a safe place for me to share my heart as I walked through a hard season, the hardest one of my life thus far. I reread words written through tears. Lament and angst covered the pages over situations and relationships that often felt, and in reality were, beyond my ability to control. But as I kept flipping through the pages toward the new year, I could see in ever so small ways how God’s steadfast love consistently showed up for me throughout the year. Each day, he was there. And in the scope of the entire year, I saw progress that was undetectable when just looking at one or two days.

As I spent a few moments in prayer, I wrote this thanksgiving in my journal: “Lord, thank you for healing us in a million small ways that we didn’t even see or notice. Thank you for your steadfast love that meets us every day.” And my heart was immediately filled with gratitude in that moment for a God who is good, and whose love endures.

The steadfast love of God is easy to miss when we aren’t necessarily looking for it. Life can be hard and good; we all experience seasons of rejoicing and times of pain. Through it all, Jesus remains the same, showing up in our joys and our sorrows. His steadfast love really does endure forever. We just have to have the eyes to see it.

Lord, thank you for your steadfast love that shows up continually, day in and day out, in each of our lives. May we lean into your love in every season of life. Amen.
