Provision

The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need.

I FIRST MET my friend Sarah when we both wrote for a website specifically for moms. Since then, I’ve followed her journey as she and her husband listened to God’s call to become full-time missionaries in Honduras. I asked her to share what God has been teaching her, and this was her response:

Last night we sat the third empty bottle of water by the door. The water truck hasn’t been by, so we are running low. We have one more bottle with water in it. Two months ago I would have panicked and made plans to disobey the curfew to go get water. Well, I would have sent Jason out to get water. I would have stressed, worried, and probably stayed up for hours in my bed until 2 a.m. thinking, “How will we get water!?” Instead, this time of isolation has taught me again and again that God will provide. Psalm 23 is true. We will never lack. Usually the water trucks come on Tuesday (today is Monday). So I’m excited to see how God will provide what we need. The water truck will be by today. How do I know this? Because we need water and God provides what we need. This resting in God’s provision is a lesson I didn’t know I needed to learn. Oh the Kindness of God to teach me of His provision during this pandemic. What a good, good Father.

And as I read about her daily life now, I wonder if I would have the same reaction, the same understanding of God’s provision. Sarah’s attitude is commendable, but she would shrug off any compliments, knowing it is God working in her mind and heart to trust his provision.

Maybe you’ve never been a missionary like my friend Sarah, but there are times in all of our lives when we need to trust for God’s provision beyond what we can currently see with our physical eyes. Sometimes provision comes in ways we expect, and other times God grows our faith and trust in him and his provision in ways we would not even imagine.

Lord, thank you for being such a good Father and for providing all that we need. Amen.
