Leap

Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.

STANDING ON THE PRECIPICE of something new, wondering if I should take the risk and leap.

Waiting for clarity of what could be next. Seeing so clearly the next step right in front of me, but little else. Much of what my future holds is a mystery at this point.

I don’t have all the answers for my why questions, at least not now. And yet, I’ve found myself in this place of faith before, knowing I needed to step out before I truly understood all that God would have planned. I know that he is faithful to me. I’ve seen it. Experienced it.

I can also remember times I lingered too long, allowing my own fear, doubt, or just plain apathy to stop me from leaping into some new thing or space. It usually did not turn out well. Anger and frustration would begin to grow, not because I couldn’t choose to stay, no, but because I knew it was time to move and, like a child, decided I’d rather dig my heels in and stay put. But staying put has never boded well for anyone when God has said, “Move on.”

And as I’ve realized how God created us, knowing us in the deepest parts of who we are, I’ve begun to understand that he knows the best times to move us on. To let go of some things, even while we begin to fumble for new. Even when we’re afraid or uncertain.

God is a fearless God. Calling us, beckoning us, inviting us, into a great wide-open space with him. And if we’ll have courage and take a leap of faith, we’ll find ourselves in a new place. It may not be perfect, we may still struggle, and sometimes it may not even seem to make sense to our earthly eyes. At least not in the moment. But we may never know all that God has for us unless we’re willing to sometimes take a chance and leap.

Lord, help us to be willing to let go of the things you tell us to let go of, to see the new thing you are doing. Afford us the courage to leap when you ask us to. Amen.
