Know

Be still, and know that I am God!

I WENT TO COLLEGE as a postsecondary student my senior year of high school. Being so young, I had to wait to register for classes, and the choices were always somewhat limited. One of the only open options that fall was an ethics class.

One paper we had to write was about God and if he was real. An older gentleman in the class stated very early on in the class discussion that he was an atheist. As he explained why, the pain of his past experiences in the church was evident. As the conversation progressed, I shared that I had a belief in God. The gentleman came up to me after class and asked if he could read my paper. I agreed.

The rest of that week I pored over hardcover commentaries, searching Scriptures to base my belief of God on and all that I knew about him. I prayed as I wrote my paper, sharing why I believed in God and his goodness. When we received our papers back, my classmate and I sat outside as he read my words.

I waited for a few moments before he whispered, “Did you write this for me?” I was dumbfounded. I barely knew this man or his story.

I smiled at him and shrugged. “I just wrote what I know and believe to be true about God.” He nodded and thanked me for letting him read my words as we said goodbye.

I never had another class with that man, but I often think of him and the journey he must have been on with God. I’m hoping my words were one of many small catalysts propelling him toward the love and knowledge of who God really is.

So many things can happen to us in life that are unfair or even evil that can skew the way that we see God. That’s why knowing who God is, is so important. We must ask ourselves: Do we know what we believe about God and his character? Because these are the truths that will anchor us to our faith when the hard things in life come at us. If we settle what we believe about him, we will only need to be still and know that he is God.

Lord, help me to simply be still and know that you are God today. Amen.
