Go

Go

Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.

James 1:22

“LET’S GO!” I reached for the front door while smiling at Jonny as he finished tying his shoes. “We’ve got fifteen coffee makers to buy, and I’m going to need your help.”

The plea for coffee makers and prayers for our community’s homeless shelter had stopped my social media scrolling in its tracks. Oh, Lord, why didn’t I think of Pastor Carol and Geary sooner? I should have known they’d need help. Please help me to be better, do better. My prayer turned my mind to action, and after gathering a few more bits of information, it was time for me and Jonny to go. We swooped into the nearest big box store, buying them out of their simplest coffee makers, clearing their shelf of filters, and loading our cart with enough small bags of coffee to supply an office for a year. As curious comments over our unusual purchase followed us through the checkout line and out the doors, we grinned. Adventuring with God is so delightfully fun.

Go. Such a simple word. And yet so challenging. If we allow it, there are a million reasons to resist, stuck in inertia. I’m guilty of all of them: assuming that what little bit we have to give is not valuable; distractions that make us good intentioned but terrible at following through; and living at maximum capacity with our time and our money—stretched so thin that there is nothing left over to be used by God. When we pray to be goers, we actively seek opportunities; we live with margin in both our time and finances for when God calls; and we trust God will multiply our smallest contribution exponentially, knowing that God’s math doesn’t follow earthly rules. Trust me, you won’t ever regret telling God you’re ready to go.

Lord, may we be active in our faith, doers of your Word, willing to go. Show us what is stopping us from being sent. Amen.
