Forever

The LORD is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.

NOTHING SEEMS TO LAST FOREVER these days. A week after we moved into our house, the dishwasher went out. One week. Within a year, we’d replaced our other kitchen appliances, along with reinforcing the foundation we didn’t know was crumbling. And it’s not just things that break. Jobs and careers can shift and change over time. Relationships we think will be there forever don’t always last.

It seems the more I try to cling to the things of the world, the easier they can slip through my fingers. And if I’m not careful, I can too easily put my hope in things that are fleeting, leading to disappointment and discouragement. But I am learning to look to the things that will last forever and let go of those that just won’t. I’m starting to cling to things like God’s love and forgiveness, mercy and grace. His presence and peace that will be with us always. These are the things that I can cling to, that won’t slip through my fingers. God and his promises are what I can firmly place my trust and hope in each day.

We have all at times put our hope in things that didn’t last. How many of us have suffered heartache or pain from people or circumstances that were fleeting? I’m sure every one of us. We are all in need of hope in something that will last forever, and we’ve found it in Jesus. He is what will last. His love. His grace. His peace. How amazing that no matter what we face in life, God is good and he is with us. His faithfulness is not just for us, but continues to each generation. His promise to be faithful is what will last forever. Of this we can be sure.

Lord, thank you for being good. We give you praise for your unfailing love for us that continues forever, lasting from generation to generation. Amen.
