Enough

Enough

My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

MY SISTER KATRINA died at twenty-eight, after a long, five-year battle with cancer. Fifteen years later and as a mom myself, I talked with my mother about what would be my own worst fear, the death of a child that she saw realized.

When I asked her what that experience was like, she paused for a moment and then said, “You’re not going to really know until you experience it. As hard as it is, God’s presence is so real, so close, it’s a sweetness that is not there in everyday life. It just carries you.”

I swallowed hard as I thought of my sister and the pain, but also the peace we felt following her death. My mom continued, “I remember thinking a while after Kate died, ‘Oh no, I have a feeling I’m not going to have this closeness forever.’ I realized he’s sufficient for whatever you go through. He is enough. It’s very individual how God meets you in the way that you need. There were so many people praying. There is a comfort, even now, that he’s always enough.”

My mom’s words tapered off as she smiled at me and wiped her own eyes. “I often wonder, What if I was alone?” She finished as she shook her head. “I know the Lord is sufficient,” she said with the conviction of someone who has walked through a hard time and seen God be faithful.

My mom’s experience gives me hope. No matter what we face in life, what hard times we are bound to walk through, our faith can hold fast. Because Jesus is enough. All the lessons and stories we’ve read are true. When life is difficult, and we wonder if what we’ve been told is true, we will find that God remains faithful to meet all of our needs. He holds us. He remains, now and forever, all that we need. He is enough.

Lord, thank you for the assurance that you are enough no matter what we face in life and for giving us all that we need. Amen.
