Encompass

How often I have wanted to gather your children together as a hen protects her chicks beneath her wings.

MY HUSBAND AND I were having dinner at the home of some new friends. As we were getting ready to leave, Kyle commented on Rembrandt’s painting of the Prodigal Son they had hanging on their wall. Kyle asked if we knew that the artist had intentionally painted the Father’s hands differently. I leaned in close to get a better look. He was correct. He explained that many people believe Rembrandt painted one hand more masculine and the other feminine to portray a more holistic, encompassing picture of God and his character. Our host knew that as well and told us that was one of several reasons why he loved the painting.

As we drove home, Kyle and I talked about the characteristics of God and how he encompasses all that is good of both a father and a mother. He is kind, caring, compassionate, as well as strong, protective, and fierce. I looked up the painting of the Prodigal Son and pondered all the ways that God has welcomed me home. All the ways his hands have guided and disciplined, comforted and loved me. And then I thanked him for being the perfect parent. The one who always welcomes us home.

Oftentimes God is portrayed as strong and mighty, and he certainly is those things, but he is also gentle and kind, loving and compassionate. Jesus explained that God longed to gather his children as a hen gathers her chicks beneath her wings. What a beautiful and yet humble picture God portrays of himself and his people.

God is so much more than we could fully understand or know. He perfectly encompasses all that we need, all that we desire, and he lovingly welcomes us home with all the masculine and feminine characteristics that make for a good parent.

Lord, thank you that you aren’t defined or limited by masculine or feminine qualities, but that you encompass all the qualities of a good parent. Thank you for who you are and for welcoming us home. Amen.
