Assurance

As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.

I LOVE SPRINGTIME. It is not necessarily my favorite season, but it is the one I am most grateful to see arrive. I live in Minnesota, where winters can be bitterly cold, dragging on much longer than they are welcome and often sending the last remnants of snow and cold into April.

But as the weather slowly warms and we emerge outside for walks and hikes in the woods around our city, I am always struck by the buds on the trees and the green that begins to once again appear across fields of grass, assuring me that spring will come. I love stopping to listen to the now warmer wind rustle through the branches, the birds chirp, and the bullfrogs call across the pond. It calms my mind and allows me to breathe deeply of the fresh, spring air.

As I watch spring arrive with my physical eyes, it offers me the assurance once again that God is in control, even in the things that I cannot see. No matter how much uncertainty we experience, the sun rising is a reminder that God will surely appear.

There’s not always a lot in life that we can be sure of, but just as the rains come to water the earth, we have this promise that the Lord will come. We must ask ourselves, Do we have eyes to see it? Do we acknowledge his presence? Do we rest in the assurance that he will appear? Or do we spend too much of our time worrying and wondering where God is, even doubting that he will show up when we need him? If so, take heart, friends; we have the confident assurance that God is nearer than we realize.

Lord, thank you for the assurance that you are in control and that you will appear here on the earth. We give all of our worry and uncertainty to you and cling to the promise of your steadfast presence and love. Amen.
