Advocate

Advocate

If anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins—and not only our sins but the sins of all the world.

1 John 2:1-2

OVER A SIX-YEAR PERIOD OF TIME, my husband and I were foster parents for the county that we live in. We took in around twenty children during those years. We worked with many county workers, judges, specialists, therapists, doctors, and other community support persons on a regular basis. Although fostering was challenging at times, we were also encouraged to see how many different people and professionals would come alongside these kids to advocate for them and try to offer them the best chance at life.

One role that I appreciated most was that of the guardian ad litem. This person was hired by the county but did not work for the county. They were solely there to advocate for the best interest of the child, apart from the parents, judges, or even social services. Their sole goal was to offer a recommendation based only on what they believed to be best for the child and the child’s future. I loved how the guardian ad litem would join with the child, seeing only what was best for them. The guardian ad litem was often a voice for a child who had yet to really have one for themselves. Guardians ad litem became some of my favorite people over those years, and even now, I appreciate how they loved the kids in our home.

When I think about the many ways that Jesus comes to our rescue, one of my favorites is that of our Advocate. Just like the guardian ad litem, Jesus pleads our case, advocating the best for us. What a gift! He gives voice to us, even when we cannot speak for ourselves. He is the best Advocate we could ever have. And even when we sin, even when we mess up, he still remains on our side, ready to stand in the gap for us. His sacrifice on the Cross atones for all of our missteps. He is always a ready Advocate for us.

Lord, thank you that you are the perfect Advocate for each one of us, regardless of what we’ve done. Thank you for your sacrifice. Amen.
