You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.

Psalm 73:24

The psalmist Asaph felt a need for divine guidance. He had just been discovering the foolishness of his heart, saying, “I was senseless and ignorant” (Ps. 73:22). And lest he be constantly led astray by it, he resolved from that day forth that God’s counsel would guide him. Having a sense of our own folly is a giant step toward becoming wise if it leads us to rely on the wisdom of the Lord. As a blind man grasps his friend’s arm to reach home in safety, we too should trust completely in God’s divine guidance, without any doubt and with the assurance that although we cannot see, it is always safe to trust the all-seeing God. “You guide me” is a blessed expression of confidence, for Asaph was sure the Lord would not decline the lowly task.

Dear believer, there is a word for you in this in which you may rest. You may be assured your God will be your counselor and friend and will guide you and “direct all [your] ways” (Isa. 45:13 KJV). This promise is fulfilled by His written Word, for Holy Scripture is His counsel to you. How blessed we are to have God’s Word always there to guide us! What is a sailor without a compass? And what is a Christian without the Bible? It is a trustworthy map, depicting every possible sandbar and channel, from the quicksand of destruction to the haven of salvation, with each faithfully mapped and marked by the One who knows the way.

Blessed are You, O God, that we may trust You to guide us now—and even to the end! Asaph recognized this as well, for after being guided through this life, he anticipated his divine reception into eternity: “Afterward you will take me into glory.” What a thought for you, believer! God Himself “will take [you] into glory”! Wandering, sinning, straying—yet at last He will take you safe and sound to glory! This is your inheritance, so live in it today. And if confusion and questions swirl around you, go in the strength of this text straight to the throne of God.

Indeed, believers have the Word of God to guide us, and Jesus promised the Holy Spirit as our guide to that truth. Here is what He told us:

I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

John 16:12 – 15

Thus, the only guidance we can truly trust comes from the Lord, through His Word by His Spirit. In addition to our text verse this morning, here is a promise of God’s continuing guidance to His people:

The LORD will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.

Isaiah 58:11

Father, I thank You for guidance through Your Word, Your Spirit, and Your Son, whom You sent “to guide our feet into the way of peace” (Luke 1:79 KJV).
