I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.

Isaiah 65:19

In heaven the glorified will weep no more, for all causes of grief will be gone forever. There will be no broken friendships or damaged hopes, and poverty, famine, danger, persecution, and slander will be unknown. There will be no distressing pain, no thought of death, and no saddening grief. “The sound of weeping…will be heard…no more” for everyone there will be perfectly sanctified. No “sinful, unbelieving heart” will tempt anyone to turn “away from the living God” (Heb. 3:12), for they will be “without fault before the throne of God” (Rev. 14:5 KJV) and will be fully “conformed to the likeness of his Son” (Rom. 8:29). They will cease to grieve over sin, for they will have ceased to sin. They will weep no more because all fear of change will be gone. They will know they are eternally secure; sin will be shut out, and they will be shut in.

They will dwell within a city that will never experience a storm, they will bask in a sun that will never set, they will drink from a river that will never run dry, and they will pick fruit from a tree that will never wither. Countless yearly cycles may go by, but eternity will never be exhausted, and while eternity endures, their immortality and blessedness will perfectly coexist with it. They “will be with the Lord forever” (1 Thess. 4:17). They will weep no more, because every desire will be fulfilled, and they will not even be able to wish for something they do not already possess. Eye and ear, heart and hand, judgment, imagination, hope, desire, and will—in fact, all their faculties—will be completely satisfied.

As imperfect as our present ideas are of “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor. 2:9), we know enough through the revelation of the Spirit that the saints above will be supremely blessed. The joy of Christ, which is an infinite fullness of true delight, will be in them, and they will bathe in the bottomless, shoreless sea of infinite happiness and blessings.

That same joyful rest awaits us as well and may not be that far away. Before long our weeping willow will be exchanged for the palm branch of victory, and sorrow’s teardrops will be transformed into pearls of everlasting joy.

“Therefore encourage each other with these words” (1 Thess. 4:18).
