Mom Heart Moments #84
Mom Heart Moments #84
Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; like a weaned child rests against his mother.
AS I CLIMBED INTO BED WITH a racing mind one night, I realized how desperately I longed for someone bigger than me to soothe my ruffled soul. I suddenly missed my mother. Where was my person to soothe my fears, kiss me, and assure me that all was well, to tuck me in peacefully after taking all my worries away?
I suddenly remembered a season when Joy was about three and was having terrible nightmares that woke her up just before dawn. Often she would quietly pad into my bedroom, crawl up onto my side of the bed, and snuggle in next to me. Throwing one of her little legs over my back, she would quickly fall deeply asleep. It was precious to feel the warmth of her soft body. She seemed to know that her place was with me, next to me. Just being with me was enough to give her the ease she needed to fall back to sleep.
She never asked permission. She knew that she belonged with me. As a baby who had nursed for two years, she had grown up being comforted by me. Now, familiar with the close affection of snuggling next to my warm body, she felt secure and fell fast asleep.
In the late-night darkness of my present night, I was brought back to those sleepy, sweet mornings. The Lord had given me a picture of what He desired for me to do. Joy, my sweet little baby, had been such a picture to me of what a child I was to God and how deeply He desired for me to wrap myself into His presence. I could fall asleep in His peace and protection, because that was where I belonged.
