Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.

A FEW WEEKS AGO, I had the privilege of attending a tea given in the home of one of my friends.

The fare was simple but elegant. Grapes, tangerines, and strawberries were served on a crystal dish with three kinds of cheese and multigrain crackers. A course of scones and jam followed. Then, delicious finger sandwiches were served —cucumber, egg salad, ham and onion cream cheese. To crown the lovely meal, we were presented chocolates with petits fours. Classical music wafted through the air as all the women present (including me and my two daughters) talked quietly.

Between each course, our hostess showed us various Pre–Raphaelite prints from England. These were beautiful prints of feminine women, knights, heroes, and saints as depicted by artists in the 1800s who set out to return elegance and beauty to art. Between the prints, she told Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s life story, as many of the pictures had been painted to reflect his poetry.

I could see Joy sitting straighter as she was inspired, desiring to become more ideal. All because a woman, who is herself always learning and studying, wanted to pass on civility and beauty to her friends. It was a great amount of work, but her labor exalted our souls.

The wonderful thing about adding beauty is that you can start with just a few items that make a big difference! Candles can be gathered at the dollar store. Beautiful music can be found for free online. Flowers from your yard or inexpensive ones from the grocery store can help transform a room and make your family feel special.
