Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it.

AWAKENING TO THE DARKNESS OF an early morning, I sleepily sauntered into the kitchen to make my first cuppa. Joy had thought ahead and placed this napkin message at the place she knew I would be making her breakfast.

Hey Sweet Mama, You’re tons of fun and a great cook. Joy

Taking an early cup of tea upstairs to awaken her, then preparing a hot breakfast of some kind before sending her off to her college classes with a prayer and a verse is how our mornings go these days. It is my way of filling her heart cup just a little before she forays off into the world of clashing values, a variety of challenges, and interesting people.

Her gratefulness and willingness to give back to me is what warmed me when I found her sweet note. Gratefulness is not a natural character trait, but it must be modeled and cultivated.

I picture my children’s souls as gardens and realize that greatness of character must be planted, cultivated, fertilized, watered, and protected while I consistently watch for and remove weeds and bugs and all that would kill what’s struggling to grow there. I understand that discipleship must be very intentional. It must be a daily, moment by moment endeavor. It is a way of life. Excellence of character does not develop by accident, but it is an intentional goal that must be set and worked toward.

Think of a specific character trait you would like to see grow in your children’s lives this year. Take some time to ponder what obstacles might be in the way, what weeds or bugs may need to be removed in order for that growth to occur.
