Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation.

WHEN WE FIND OURSELVES IN difficult circumstances, especially in seasons where trouble seems to come in waves, we see ourselves for what we really are. Our souls are laid bare. Our limitations, vulnerability, and weaknesses are exposed, as well as our inability to do anything to save ourselves.

The situation for each one might be different: a broken marriage, a prodigal or otherwise seemingly impossible child, financial issues, loneliness, failure, deep soul wounds and rejection at the hands of those who should have loved us, broken dreams. Whatever the situation, we feel alone, unnoticed, helpless.

Of course, this is just the place where God can teach us to rely on Him completely. He so desires to be the One who fulfills our greatest longings. He wants us to know His voice of guidance, purpose, love, and mercy.

It seems those who are wisest, most true, and deepest in humility and gentleness have had to walk through many such times of doubt and testing. Because they have lived through those times, they are deeper, more aware of their need for God, more thankful for His mercy, more focused on eternity, more compassionate toward those who are lost, and more humble in their demeanor.

Sometimes, in all of our efforts to control life and to accomplish our works, we subtly think our success depends on ourselves. Our happiness can be found by striving enough. A loving Father must bring us to the edge of our own limitations, so that we can live above our mere worldly focus and become more familiar with His strength and mercy and love and ways.

Today would it help to just admit your inability to provide for your own needs, come up with your own answers, or change yourself without His strength, wisdom, and love? He’s waiting to respond to your cry.
