Mom Heart Moments #209

Mom Heart Moments #209

There is a time for every event under heaven. . . . A time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance.

Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4

LIFE CAN SOMETIMES BE STRESSFUL, overwhelming, exhausting, and demanding. Sometimes moms feel guilty admitting the variety of feelings they have. But feelings are just a reaction to the situation we are in.

Much of the stability of life depends upon us just doing whatever is in front of us that needs to be done, whether we feel like doing it or not! But there are times in life that seem overwhelming and too depleting to handle. A few years ago, Clay and I decided that when we got to this point, we needed to call a Sober Club meeting. It stands for

  • Sick
  • Of
  • Being
  • Responsible

On Sober Club nights, we always do something that we want to do just for us. We go out to dinner, see a movie, take a walk in the mountains, or go on a drive to see the city lights with music blaring and windows down, just cruising and trying to relax. We make it a point to do something different that takes us away from the stress, the kids, and the house. It’s a rule that we can’t talk about any problems or money or stress or ministry. We just get away, relax, and have fun!

The principle is similar to the idea of Sabbath. Get away from your responsibilities just for a while! Go to a park when your kids are driving you nuts. Or take a nap. Watch a movie instead of doing one more chore, buy some flowers when it has been snowing for ten days straight. You get the idea!

Life is still there tomorrow or whenever the Sober Club meeting ends, but we all have blown off a little steam and can face our responsibilities with a fresher outlook.

Do you need a Sober Club meeting? Who might you invite to join you, and what will you do?
