Decide To Testify About God’s Goodness - Making Tough Decisions with Confidence

Decide to Testify about God’s Goodness

“On that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites.” (Judges 4:23, NIV)

Over the last few years our church has fostered a Testimony Time on the last Sunday of the month. My husband opens up this time by reminding everyone that a good testimony is “short, to the point, and brags on Jesus.” Congregants are given the opportunity to share what God has done in, through, and around them in order to offer praise to God, remind themselves of His goodness, and inspire the faith of those who are listening. It is a powerful time of hearing what God is doing in other people’s lives.

You may know people who chalk up provision, things going their way, and miraculous encounters in their lives as coincidences or the power of attraction or karma. But we know better, right?! We know that it is Almighty God who is at work and He alone deserves the praise and thanks for doing the things that only He can do.

Giving a testimony is just a fancy way of saying “give God the credit.” A mentor of ours calls testimony time, “Say So.” He explains that God is always working, so we should look for Him and when we see Him working we should “say so.”

Speaking of giving God credit, in Judges 4 we read about how God enabled Barak and the troops of Israel to defeat Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army who had been oppressing them for years. God provided the victory for His people as they obeyed His directives.

Judges 5 is an ultimate testimony, giving God praise for the Israelites’ victory against Jabin through the defeat of Sisera and his army. And it’s done through song! The Israelites’ history was passed down through word of mouth, helping them remember God’s faithfulness and deliverance from oppression.

Testifying to what God has done fortifies our faith and spurs others on to grow in their faith.

Here are some examples of ways God may be working: provision to pay your bills, a friend reaching out at just the right time, His comfort as you grieve, healing from sickness, His sustaining peace in the midst of a painful situation, the laughter of a child that lifts your spirit.

What would you add? Where have you seen God at work in your life?

The more you train your eyes to be on the lookout for evidence of His goodness, the more you will see His amazing work in your life.

While it’s great to remind ourselves of His faithfulness, a testimony is meant to be shared. Consider texting a friend, calling them, or telling them in person what God has done in your life lately, and ask them where they have seen God at work in their life.

Where have you seen God at work in your life lately? Take some time today to tell someone else about it.

Prayer:

Dear God: You are worthy of all praise! Thank You for all You have done and all that You are. Help me readily give you the credit and thanks for working in, through, and around me. Open my eyes to see Your faithfulness on display. May my lips declare Your goodness and proclaim Your mighty acts to those around me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
