Magnificent Prayer #205
Falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth.
1 Corinthians 14:25 KJV
In the afternoon “God was in me of a truth.” Oh, it was blessed company indeed! God enabled me so to agonize in prayer that I was quite wet with sweat, though in the shade and the cool wind. My soul was drawn out very much for the world; I grasped for multitudes of souls. I think I had a greater burden for sinners than for the children of God, though I felt as if I could spend my life in cries for both.
I enjoyed great sweetness in communion with my dear Saviour. I think I never in my life felt such an entire weanedness from this world and so much resigned to God in everything. Oh, that I may always live to God!
DAVID BRAINERD
Pray About It: David Brainerd often retreated to the woods for times of “agonizing in prayer.” This particular time was the occasion of his twenty-fifth birthday and he had set it aside for prayer and fasting.
When a prayer warrior is so fully moved with compassion for primarily the lost as was Brainerd, he is most acutely identifying with the heart of God. It’s God’s will that none should perish but that all should come to everlasting life—and yet multitudes are lost. God weeps, David Brainerd weeps, and we will weep if we catch a glimpse of what these two see. The result is “sweetness in communion with the dear Savior.” What a reward! What a birthday present!
When his critics told William Booth he was moving too fast in his ministry to the lost, he said, “If anyone wants a reply, let him ask the lost souls in Hell whose brothers and sisters are following them there. Let him go and ask the blood-washed throng in Heaven, whose eyes are wide open at last to the value of salvation. Let him anticipate the Judgment Day, and in spirit stand before the Throne and propose, if he dares, the question to God Almighty. I think from Hell, Heaven and the Great White Throne, the answer would come back, ‘More speed! Go faster!…Push forward! Hurry onward! Save the world!’”
