Magnificent Prayer #156
Give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, “Who is the LORD?”
Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.

A great many people do not pray because they do not feel any sense of need. The sign that the Holy Spirit is in us is that we realize that we are empty, not that we are full. We have a sense of absolute need. We come across people who try us, circumstances that are difficult, conditions that are perplexing, and all these things awaken a dumb sense of need, which is a sign that the Holy Spirit is there.
If we are ever free from the sense of need, it is not because the Holy Spirit has satisfied us, but because we have been satisfied with as much as we have. A sense of need is one of the greatest benedictions because it keeps our life rightly related to Jesus Christ.

Pray About It: We are so accustomed to praying for God to meet our needs, to take them away, to fill us so that we’re no longer empty. Today, let’s pray that He keep us as needy as necessary to stay in conscious dependence on Him. And that we stay as empty as necessary to hunger for His Spirit.
Oh, Lord, let us never be without need, lest we forget Thee!
The best disposition for praying is that of being desolate, forsaken, stripped of everything.
