Wise Fear

Wise Fear

Luke 8:23, NLT

As they sailed across, Jesus settled down for a nap. But soon a fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat was filling with water, and they were in real danger.

Setting the Scene

Jesus chose twelve men to follow him and learn from him. At least five of his disciples had been fishermen who understood winds and waves. But this also means that as many as seven of the Lord’s traveling band were “landlubbers.”

It’s difficult to measure which is greater—fear based on ignorance or fear based on knowledge. If we’re in a situation we’ve never been in before and things begin to look like they are getting out of control, it’s natural to check out the reactions of those who are experienced. If they are calm, our worries seem unfounded. But if things look precarious and even people with lots of experience appear scared, we start to fear for our lives.

The account tells us, “Jesus settled down for a nap.” Perhaps some of the disciples also nodded off. But the sudden change in the elements put everyone on edge. Once the boat began to fill with water, there was no longer any doubt they were all in danger.

Five of the disciples had good reason to be afraid, and the other seven took their cues from them! The capacity to fear is a God-given ability to sense danger and avoid it. When the danger is real, the fear is wise. It prevents us from doing stupid things and can sharpen our focus for problem solving. If the danger is imagined, fear is wasted effort. The disciples were about to discover that Jesus redefines danger and removes fear. They learned that even wise fear can be set aside by the power of God.

Getting Personal

Is fear more likely to turn you toward God in trust or to turn you away from him, doubting his control? Why?

When was the last time you were truly fearful? How did you handle that occasion?

Fear ought not to have the last word in our lives. Fear can grab our attention and motivate action, but it can also be a reminder that our ultimate trust must be in God, who is greater than our fears.

Talking to God

Today in prayer, focus on aspects of God’s power, authority, and trustworthiness that emphasize his sovereignty. Then shift your focus to his great love and complete goodness. Put all your fears into the care of this powerful and perfectly loving Lord.
