The Impossible

Mark 10:27, NLT

Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But not with God. Everything is possible with God.”

Setting the Scene

The answer to the question, “Who in the world can be saved?” (Mark 10:26, NLT), turns out to be quite simple. From a human point of view, salvation is not possible for anyone. No one can be saved by his or her wealth (or lack of it) or achievements or talents or good deeds: “Humanly speaking, it is impossible.” But here’s the good news: “Everything is possible with God.” Salvation cannot be earned; it is a gift from God, available to people regardless of financial portfolio, social status, ethical track record, moral reputation, race, religion, political affiliation, nationality, or other identifying characteristics. No one is saved on merit; but all are saved who humbly repent and follow Jesus—by grace through faith. As Paul wrote, “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it” (Ephesians 2:8-9, NLT).

Getting Personal

When did you realize that you were a sinner and could not save yourself?

How do you know that you have eternal life?

How do you respond when you consider all that God has done for you through Christ?

Two basic attitudes can hinder people from following Christ. Some people might think they are good enough and somehow deserve God’s forgiveness and rewards. Their pride keeps them from repenting and following. Others, at the opposite end of the spectrum, might think that they have nothing to offer God or that they are too bad, what they have done is too great to be forgiven. The truth is that God can and does save all kinds of people. The Bible records a diverse and unlikely collection of individuals God chose to serve him: Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Rahab, Ruth, David, Josiah, Esther, Amos, Peter, Mary Magdalene, Zacchaeus, Paul, Luke, and Lydia—to name a few. None of them deserved anything from God. God still uses unlikely people to change the world—people like you.

Rejoice in your prayer time today in the freedom of knowing you don’t have to earn or deserve God’s love. Let his grace overwhelm you with gratitude, joy, and praise.
