The Comeback

Matthew 26:52-54, NLT

“Put away your sword,” Jesus told him. “Those who use the sword will die by the sword. 53Don’t you realize that I could ask my Father for thousands of angels to protect us, and he would send them instantly? 54But if I did, how would the Scriptures be fulfilled that describe what must happen now?”

Setting the Scene

Jesus told Peter to put away his sword and allow God’s plan to unfold. Although Jesus had told him and the others several times that he had to die in order to gain victory, Peter didn’t get it. He may have listened carefully and even nodded as if he understood, but it made no sense to him. At one point, Peter had reprimanded Jesus for talking that way and Jesus had responded strongly (Matthew 16:22-23).

Jesus’ words here, recorded only by Matthew, emphasize the difference between people’s tendency to take matters into their own hands (and suffer the consequences) and God’s more far-reaching actions. The reason for putting away the sword was that “those who use the sword will die by the sword.” Jesus was probably quoting a local proverb. He meant that the law of vengeance is below the level of God’s plans. Jesus clarified this by stating that if he so desired, he could summon “thousands of angels” to deliver him. Jesus was stating that he was in control. He did not need the help of a few sleepy disciples. He could easily get out of this situation, but he had already settled this matter with the Father during his previous hours of prayer.

As finite human beings, our perspective is severely limited. We may think we know the sure outcome of a choice or action only to experience the opposite result. We can barely anticipate what will happen today, let alone in the years and decades to follow. That’s why we must trust in our sovereign Father who knows us perfectly, and he knows the past, present, and future. Trusting isn’t easy when we’re faced with torches and swords in the night. But we aren’t alone—Jesus is with us.
