Know God’s Care

Matthew 10:29-31, NLT

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. 30And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. 31So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Setting the Scene

Jesus continued his encouragement for fearless faith by highlighting how much his followers mean to God. This awesome God whom we are to fear (Matthew 10:28) is also the God who cares about the smallest sparrow. When we fear him, we have nothing to worry about, because he loves us. God is concerned about all his creatures, even sparrows, and he knows about their lives and deaths—and we are much more valuable than sparrows. God also knows about every detail of our lives, even the number of our hairs.

Sparrows will fall to the ground; God’s people die, sometimes by martyrdom. Yet we are so valuable that Jesus died for us. Because God places such a high value on us, we need never fear personal threats or difficult trials. Our Father is in control. He knows and controls everything that happens to us: the big problems and the tiniest details.

Getting Personal

When have you felt as if God didn’t care about you?

How does this passage encourage you and give you hope?

In these words to his apostles, Jesus states what the Scriptures affirm time and time again, that God cares for us and is a refuge for us (see Nahum 1:7). And Peter echoes Jesus’ promise of verse 31: “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you” (1 Peter 5:7, NLT). When you feel hemmed in on every side, remember that God is with you. When you feel alone, cut off from love, remember he loves you. When doubts and questions about the future fill your emotions, remember that Jesus cares.

Take a few moments before you pray to make a quick list of recent evidences that God cares for you. Pray with a thankful heart over this list, rejoicing in the personal care you receive from the God of the universe.
