Give Me A Break

Give Me a Break

Contrary to all the commercials promoting products made to help you keep going despite your cold, your exhaustion, or your depression, the truth is that God understands that life can, at times, be overwhelming, and He actually wants us to take a break from all the activity happening around us. In fact, the Hebrews were given a law about setting aside one day a week for rest; they were forbidden to do work of any kind. Jesus taught that the law had been made for man, so that we might experience rest.

I think sometimes we stay busy because we are insecure. The voices in our heads tell us we are supposed to do all that our friends are doing, even if it leaves us in a frenzy. We have developed the idea that if we stop, if we don’t meet the needs of everyone around us, every second of the day, if we don’t answer the phone, if we don’t take that position at church, if we don’t go to this event, and if we don’t answer that e-mail, the world will stop on its axis, and somehow, we will be disappointing God. But His Word tells us something different.

His Promises

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Matthew 11:28-29

For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.

Jeremiah 31:25

So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God. For all who have entered into God’s rest have rested from their labors, just as God did after creating the world. So let us do our best to enter that rest.

Hebrews 4:9-11
