How To Measure Your Growth

Lord, how can I know whether I am growing toward spiritual maturity?

Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in your life: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Let your roots grow down into me, and let your life be built on me. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught.

What are a few practical ways to start maturing in my faith?

Remain faithful to the things you have been taught. Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your life. Teach and counsel others with all the wisdom Christ gives.

What can I pray when I feel discouraged about my growth?

I am certain that you, God, who began the good work within me, will continue your work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. I pray that I will keep on growing in knowledge and understanding. For I want to live a pure and blameless life until the day of Christ’s return. May I always be filled with the fruit of my salvation—the righteous character produced in my life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring you much glory and praise, Lord. Grant me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Spiritual growth can feel like two steps forward and one step back. But remember: even incremental progress means you’re growing. Don’t be discouraged when your growth feels slow or at a plateau. God will continue his good work in you as you pursue him.
