Are You Over It Yet?
“I heard a loud shout from the throne, saying, “Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:3-5, NLT)
Are you feeling better yet? Have you gotten over your grief? When will you be done with being so sad? Whether you’re weeks, months, or years out from your loss, you may have had a well-meaning friend or family member ask a question like this. It can feel frustrating to field comments like these because deep in our hearts we know that grief won’t ever go away. You will always miss your person. Your life will always be different because he or she is gone. There’s no such thing as “moving on” from grief. Or is there?
While you and I will live with the ache of loss for the rest of our earthly lives, God promises that we won’t live with this sorrow for the rest of our eternal lives. As those who trust in Jesus’ death and resurrection on our behalf, one day, we will be over this! One day, we will be with the Lord forever, along with all the believers who came before us. Even more, when Jesus comes again, he will not raise us just to live this life over again. He will abolish the sin that separates us from him, and welcome in a new creation. In this transformed world, we will enjoy his presence for eternity!
If you can think of all the little glimpses that you get of God’s glory in this world—a stunning sunset, joyful laughter, a beautiful song—imagine how much greater they will be with King Jesus in eternity. One day, you will move on from the sorrows of this life to the glory that awaits you. All of these small glimpses of joy will be realized when crying, death, and pain are wiped away and “everything new” fills God’s good creation once more.
As you wait and walk with grief, let this truth encourage you to pray for Jesus’ return. You know the reality of a life marked by loss. Throw all your trust on Jesus’ promise to transform that loss to life. The book of Revelation ends with a prayer that can become your own as you look ahead to God’s promises fulfilled: “Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20). Let this be your prayer today. One day soon, you will truly be over this sadness. Behold, he’s coming soon (Revelation 22:12).
