When It All Goes Up In Flames - Hope in Worst-Case Scenarios

When It All Goes Up in Flames

“Then Nebuchadnezzar said, ‘Praise to the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego! He sent his angel to rescue his servants who trusted in him. They defied the king’s command and were willing to die rather than serve or worship any god except their own God… There is no other god who can rescue like this!’” (Daniel 3:28-29, NLT)

Life was all good until ___________. How would you fill in the blank?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego get it. These boys were once handpicked by the king’s very own chief of staff, trained to be the top officials in Babylon, and rubbing elbows and chest-bumping like buddies with the king. No one could match their wisdom and judgment, and in terms of career achievements, fame, and riches, they were livin’ on a mountain high! Snagged these big breaks! Life was going their way!

Until the king commanded everyone to worship his gold statue with quite the threat: bow or burn. “All the people…bowed to the ground and worshiped the gold statue” (Daniel 3:7).

Well, all the people, that is—except for three.

All eyes turned to the last ones standing: Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And because these young men refused to bow down to what they knew was wrong, they faced the heat and were flung into the fire, resulting in nothing but screaming and wailing.

Indeed, the worst-case did in fact happen.

Except wait…the cries aren’t coming from inside the furnace—but out of the mouths of the soldiers stationed on the outside of the flames.

Suddenly the king jumps up in alarm! Not out of concern for his own men, of course—something else was amiss. As Nebuchadnezzar leans in, 1, 2, 3…4?? He pulls his advisers over in amazement. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!” (Daniel 3:24-25).

Don’t miss this: Three men went into the furnace, and three men came out. It was only in the fire when the king could see Jesus.

The same can be true in your situation too.

As easy as it is to sing God’s praises after the answered prayer, what if the call is actually to hold fast in faith before it comes? Wait expectantly for our Savior to save even when the flames are hot around our marriage, finances, and health? Ultimately, put God on display through the blaze, so those watching see him?

Since God is the same yesterday as he is today and he “causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28), we can confidently stand in the fires of life knowing help is always on the way for us, too.

When that day comes for us, maybe the likes of King Nebuchadnezzar will finally see Jesus for themselves too and with eyes bugged out, declare, “There is no other god who can rescue like this!” (Daniel 3:29).

And who knows? Maybe that was the whole point all along…

In the heat of it all, you can indeed trust that your Savior still saves.

Prayer: God, thank you for your faithful presence in the fire. In the heat of it all, I trust in you—please make yourself known and deliver me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
