Trusts In God For What Seems Impossible

A HERO’S TALE

Heaven had been silent a long time.

It had been about 450 years since God had spoken to his people through the prophets. The Romans now ruled most of the ancient world, and God’s people, the Jews, were spread out all over the empire. It was a scary, confusing time.

All the while, God’s people were waiting for the Messiah, or Savior, that Scripture had promised. But where was he? When would he come? Had God forgotten them? The people waited . . . and waited . . . and waited.

And then one day in the small town of Nazareth, the angel Gabriel visited a young Jewish woman named Mary and delivered a shocking message: soon, she would give birth to the Savior, God’s own Son.

Mary wasn’t married, so she asked the angel, “How will this be?” Gabriel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the baby to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35).

Mary was scared and puzzled. But she responded, “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true” (Luke 1:38). The birth of Jesus would be a mind-blowing miracle. But Mary answered this incredible promise with incredible faith!

DECODING THE MESSAGE

Imagine if an angel suddenly appeared to you and promised you’d be able to fly. Or breathe underwater like a fish. Or shoot lightning bolts from your fingertips.

Would you believe him?

What Gabriel told Mary sounded just as crazy. In fact, it was humanly impossible. Mary had no idea how it would happen. And yet she believed God anyway. That’s true faith —believing without seeing (see Hebrews 11:1).

We’re called to show the same faith in God. Why? Because God can do the impossible. There’s no limit to his power or abilities. He created the universe, so he can do anything in his universe that pleases him.

God is a big God, and our faith in him needs to be big too. Whatever your situation is, God can do what seems impossible, like today’s verse says. You might not know how he’s going to do it, but you can trust that God —in his goodness, wisdom, and love —will work mightily on your behalf.
