A HERO’S TALE

What’s your favorite book of all time?

Maybe something from the Harry Potter or Chronicles of Narnia series? How about The Hunger Games or Diary of a Wimpy Kid? Or maybe it’s one of the classics from your youth, such as Curious George, The Cat in the Hat, or The Little Engine That Could? Don’t be afraid to admit it. Your secret is safe.

Adult critics have debated the world’s greatest book for centuries. In 2007, J. Peder Zane, a writer and editor in North Carolina, asked 125 of the world’s top living authors what the 10 greatest books of all time were and published his own book about it.

Number one on the list was Anna Karenina by 19th-century Russian author Leo Tolstoy. You probably haven’t read that yet. It’s loooooong.

Zane’s list was interesting, but the top choice was way off. History’s greatest book didn’t come from a human author. The Holy Spirit wrote it.

It’s the Bible.

DECODING THE MESSAGE

The Bible wins because it’s God’s perfect masterpiece. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is a fascinating (and completely true) love story of how a holy God mercifully sacrificed his own Son to save sinners like us.

Human men wrote the Bible’s words, but God’s Spirit directed every single pen stroke. As today’s verse from 2 Peter says, the Bible’s human authors all “were moved by the Holy Spirit” as they wrote.

It’s fitting that this is the last devotion in this book. After all, there’s nothing better you can do in life than to believe the Bible’s Spirit-inspired words.

So as you put down this devotion, pick up God’s Word once again. Read it. Memorize it. Like a dry sponge soaks up water, let its eternal truths fill your soul. No other book offers the life-changing words of God’s salvation.

The apostle Peter so wonderfully put it while speaking to Jesus in John 6:68-69: “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. We believe, and we know you are the Holy One of God.”

May you, by reading and believing the Spirit-inspired Word of God, have the same saving faith in Jesus Christ!
