Brevity Of Life

“What is the greatest surprise you have found about life?” a university student asked me several years ago. “Its brevity,” I replied. . . . Time moves so quickly, and no matter who we are or what we have done, the time will come when our lives will be over.

When life is hard, time seems to move slowly, but in reality life is only a vapor. You see the mist of a fog for a short time, and then it’s gone. Moses lamented the shortness of life when he wrote, “Seventy years are given to us! Some even live to eighty. But even the best years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10). At any age, you don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Pray like Moses prayed: “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

Look at each day as a gift from Me. Seek My guidance about how to use your time. Follow My Son’s instruction, “We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work” (John 9:4). When personal challenges tempt you to get off course, remember that each day moves you closer to being with Me for eternity. For now, be strong and continue on the path I’ve charted for you. Live each day as it comes—redeeming the time!

Satisfy us each morning with your unfailing love, so we may sing for joy to the end of our lives.
