Why We Serve

Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.

Matthew 20:28

Servants know how to set aside some of their own needs, desires, and agendas to instead seek out and meet the needs of others. Practicing service begins by being intentional in recognizing the needs around you and then meeting them.

This is an important practice because when you serve others, you are actually doing exactly what Jesus would have done—blessing someone else by meeting a deep need in their life. When you serve others, you are helping them see Jesus.

The exercises this week encourage you to pay attention to opportunities to serve. You may miss some opportunities, and that is okay. Talk to God about this and receive his grace. Remember that serving can sometimes be difficult and often requires sacrifice. If serving is hard for you, ask the Holy Spirit to show you the places in your heart where you feel resistant. Trust that he will help you serve from your heart as you serve with your body.
