The Sacrifice to Make after Sin

The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

Psalm 51:17

King David wrote this psalm after he committed adultery with Bathsheba and arranged for her husband’s murder. David is saying that the only sacrifice one can offer to God after sinning is a broken, repentant spirit. You sacrifice your pride, and in return God gives you his mercy and forgiveness, which leads to a restored relationship with him. Your sacrifice is always less than what God gives in return.

Are you able to sacrifice your pride, rationalizations, and excuses, or do you try to make other “sacrifices” to appease him? For example, do you read your Bible after you explode with anger, or give to the church after spending money on something that doesn’t honor God? These activities may help us refocus our hearts, but we must never use them to simply assuage any guilt we may feel.
