Rhythms Of Rest

Rhythms of Rest

[Jesus said,] “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.”

Matthew 11:28-30, MSG

In this fast-paced world, rest seems so attractive yet so elusive. However, Jesus doesn’t suggest that you rest; he commands it. The practice of rest involves making time to intentionally restore your mind and body for the sake of your soul. Whereas Sabbath rest focuses on setting apart one day each week for rest and worship, this practice focuses on integrating regular rhythms of rest into your day.

These exercises are designed to create intentional moments of rest each day, helping you become more aware of activities, people, and places that restore you, as well as those that drain you. It may feel difficult to allow yourself to truly accept God’s invitation to rest. Accepting that your mind, body, and soul need rest means accepting your limitations. Use your limitations as reminders to rest, restore, and reflect on your need for God.
