Guard Your Lips

Guard Your Lips

Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.

Psalm 141:3

Do you have a tendency to say things you later regret? Are there times you wish you’d just kept your mouth shut? Do you complain too much, gossip, use profanity, or criticize others?

If these things describe you, then you may have a problem controlling your tongue. Controlling your tongue is being aware of what comes out of your mouth and then, by the Holy Spirit’s power, changing words that are destructive into those that are gracious, thankful, encouraging, loving, truthful, and a blessing to others. God emphasizes that even though the tongue is small, it holds incredible power. It can be used to praise God and bless others. But if not controlled, it can set one’s whole life on fire (see James 3:5-6).

The exercises this week will ask you to reflect on what comes out of your mouth. Controlling the tongue is a practice that takes a lifetime to learn, and you will continually need God’s help with it.
