Freedom from Indulgence

No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.

Luke 16:13

Almost everyone has heard the phrase “Money is power.” Whether we live in wealth or poverty, money has the power to replace God as master of our lives.

Frugality means choosing to spend less money on our own pleasure, prestige, and comfort. It is living below our means to be free from wants (and debts!) that would otherwise distract us from effectively knowing and serving God. Frugality is similar to sacrifice and simplicity, yet it is more about recognizing the surplus in our lives and choosing to stop indulging.

This week will encourage you to reflect on your spending habits, standard of living, and finances, and it will reveal the desires of your heart. The goal is to help you experience freedom from indulgence so you can develop the habit of being more focused on loving others and walking closely with God.
