Reflecting Jesus

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

An elderly friend, Alf, fell on ice and broke his pelvis. Gene and I visited him in the hospital during his recovery. Kitchen staff brought lunch trays to him and his three roommates shortly after we arrived. Alf removed the cover from his plate to check out his meal: meatloaf a tad overcooked, mushy broccoli, and plain boiled potatoes. Canned fruit cocktail for dessert. Some folks might have grimaced, but not Alf. He smiled and said, “Thank you! I appreciate your kindness. This meal looks amazing.” He spoke loud enough to ensure anyone within earshot could hear.

Alf sought to minister to others despite being in pain. When we arrived, he asked questions about our children and ministry. He looked out for his roommates’ needs, and he thanked those who served him—doctors, nurses, kitchen staff, and janitors. He never uttered a complaint.

I don’t know if Alf talked about Jesus in that place, but this I do know—he reflected Jesus to all who entered his room.
