One Voice

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

People wasted no time offering unsolicited advice when Job fell into a crisis. His wife told him to curse God and die, and his friends tried to convince him that God was punishing him. They meant well, in a warped way. Thankfully, Job knew enough not to listen.

I encountered a similar situation when leadership issues created an unhealthy culture in a ministry I was involved in. A trusted friend said, “Quit. Just walk away.” I was tempted, but I prayed and listened for God’s voice. He said, “Stay.”

People generally want to help when they see someone in trouble, but caution is prudent. Our primary counsel comes from the Lord. He alone sees the bigger picture and he promises to give wisdom in abundance (James 1:5). When we don’t know which way to turn, he’ll tell us. He might speak through a godly friend or lead through circumstances. He may direct through impressions he puts in our heart. One thing’s sure—the counsel he gives is always good.
