El Shaddai

El Shaddai

In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
even as we put our hope in you.

Psalm 33:21–22

Pause

Names are important. They’re our identity. They’re how others know us. The same is true about God’s names—they’re one way in which he reveals his identity to us. They’re how we get to know him.

One of God’s many names is El Shaddai. It means “God Almighty” and reminds us that he is all-powerful. The psalmist used it in Psalm 91:1—“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”

When life crumbles around us, we know we can find safety and solace in God Almighty’s shadow. There’s no better place to hide in times like this. He alone is our refuge. He alone provides the security for which we long when difficulties and disappointments come our way. He shields us from enemies such as fear and doubt and provides shade from the heat.

El Shaddai is there for us. He is our hope today and always.

Ponder

Psalm 91:1 reminds us of 911. We can call on El Shaddai for help. Bask in this truth.

Pray

Father, thank you for hiding me in your protective shadow. I will rest there.

“Faith is not believing in my own unshakable belief. Faith is believing an unshakable God when everything in me trembles and quakes.”
