Balanced
Balanced
Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.
Hebrews 12:2

My husband and I do workouts using an online resource. We’re often instructed to do a stretch that requires us to stand on one leg while bending the opposite leg at a ninety-degree angle and holding that ankle. “Focus your eyes on a stationary object to maintain balance,” says the teacher. “You’re less likely to fall.”
Figuratively speaking, crisis of any sort can knock us off balance. Fixing our gaze on something—or better, someone—immovable prevents us from toppling. Jesus is that someone. He endured suffering for our sake so we can do the same without losing heart. His example inspires us to persevere. It encourages us to look beyond the hardship to the hope that lies ahead.
Jesus refused to give up or run away from suffering. He persevered to show us that standing strong in the face of difficulty can be done. Keeping our eyes on him and his example helps us maintain our equilibrium and keep going when heartache threatens to topple us.
Ponder
What fears or doubts are threatening to knock you off balance?
Pray
God, keep my eyes focused on Jesus’ example. Give me strength to keep going.
“Sudden loss, besides leaving us hurt and bewildered, can leave us listing seriously to one side. … God’s secure love and His sure promise to care for us are the perfect ballast; they provide stability without adding weight to our load. When our lives are filled with Jesus Christ and the security, worth, and identity he provides, the losses we experience cannot destabilize us.”
