A Trustworthy Friend
A Trustworthy Friend
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28 nlt
Pause
I was waiting to catch a train in eastern Europe when a slight man dressed in ragged clothes approached me. He motioned to my suitcase as though offering to carry it. My instinct said, “Don’t trust him.” But the Polish friend with me nodded.
The moment the train arrived, the man scooped up my suitcase and climbed the steps. Once on board, he set my bag down and opened his palm for payment.
I chose to trust a stranger. I accepted his offer to carry my physical burden and paid him for doing it. Jesus offers to carry our weight of another type for free. You’d think we’d eagerly hand it over. Instead, we hesitate or insist on carrying it ourselves. Why? Because we’re not sure we can trust him and his intent toward us.
Jesus is no suspicious-looking stranger. He’s our friend. Our best friend who always has our best interest in mind, and he is totally trustworthy.
Ponder
Have you trusted Jesus with your deepest pain? If not, why?
Pray
God, help me trust you more. Carry my concerns and give me rest.
“We’re foolish unless we always trust Him with our destiny. Present trials, suffering, or tragedy may often seem the end—or cause us to wish it were. Yet the Father knows this period isn’t the end of a sentence, but a connecting point in the completion of the masterpiece which is His whole story for us.”
