Day 3: Faithfully Fight Insecurity

“Before Moses left Midian, the Lord said to him, “Return to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill you have died.” So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God.”

My relationship with the character trait of submission has always been . . . well, volatile, to say the least.

I get it from my dad. Both of us oscillate between fearless faith and fearful control. And it’s exhausting.

Is there any way to drive out the fears, insecurities, and doubts attempting to overtake our mind and soul?

I finally found solace in the story of a man named Moses. His journey from fear to faith, from self-sabotage to submission, is one that we can and must learn from if we are to blaze the trail God’s called us to.

From the onset, Moses’ life overflowed with twists and turns. And yet, throughout his early years, we see a divine favor on Moses’ life.

It all crescendos to an encounter that Moses has with God where God tells Moses, “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”

Talk about an introduction and an invitation!

Here we see a theme that reappears time and again throughout Scripture. God tells his people “go” and expects a faith-filled response of obedience. We saw it with Abraham, we see it here with Moses, and we’ll see it again with other Trailblazers.

“Go. I’m sending you to Pharaoh.”

Can you imagine? Being told that you must face your most intimidating enemy? Getting sent back to the place of your darkest shame, your worst sin, your deepest fear, and your biggest regret? Why, God, would you call Moses to return to the one place he never wanted to see again?

Have you ever found yourself asking a similar question?

“Why, God, do you want me to try to have children again after three miscarriages?”

“Why, God, do you want me to try marriage again when I’ve been cheated on twice?”

“Why, God, do you want me to start that business when I embarrassingly filed for bankruptcy a decade earlier?”

“Why, God, do you want me to face and forgive my abuser?”

“Why, God, do you want me to start this endeavor when all I heard growing up was that I’d never amount to anything?”

Why, God?

God’s invitations have a way of evoking our deepest fears and insecurities. God desires to meet us in the muck and mess of our souls and to heal us, to grow us, and to push us toward a better and more whole version of ourselves.

What will you choose? The way of Jesus or the dungeon of doubt?

Submission to God doesn’t mean an absence of trials on the road ahead, but it does secure his presence on the journey. To practice submission is to trade in fear for faith. Or in other words, to be a Trailblazer means to consistently choose faith over fear. Which will it be?
