How can I become more sensitive to others’ needs?

If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Who wants to be around a person who couldn’t care less about others? Who enjoys being around an overly sensitive person who always seems to get hurt by whatever is said? Sensitivity in proper balance, however, is a beautiful quality. Most people are attracted to sensitive people because they care deeply about others without smothering or manipulating them or becoming jealous or controlling. Ironically, both insensitivity and oversensitivity are products of a self-centered focus, and both can be changed by focusing on others rather than on yourself.

Sensitivity reflects alertness to others and responds appropriately to their feelings. You can become more sensitive by listening to others, considering how their situation is affected by their feelings and struggles, showing respect for others and their perspectives, and being willing to lay aside your own needs to treat others with gentleness and care. God has equipped you in special ways to meet the needs of others around you. When you put aside your own agenda, listen carefully, and act thoughtfully, you are developing the kind of sensitive heart that is so precious to God and that touches others right where they need it most.
