How do I talk to God?

A Moment with God

I will praise you, LORD, with all my heart.

[Jesus said,] “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”

Prayer is talking to God. As you talk to him, you praise and thank him, confess sins, make requests, express pain and frustration, and share what is happening in your life. Good conversation also includes listening, so make time for God’s Spirit to speak to you. When you listen to God, he can make his wisdom and resources available to you. Prayer can also soften your heart and help you avoid the debilitating effects of anger, resentment, and bitterness. There’s so much more to prayer than just getting an answer to a question or a solution for a problem. God often does more in your heart through your act of praying than he does in actually answering your prayer. As you persist in talking and listening, you will gain greater understanding of yourself, your situation, your motivation, God’s nature, and his direction for your life.

Divine Promise

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
