Why does life sometimes seem so empty? How do I fill the emptiness inside me?

A Moment with God

Let them no longer fool themselves by trusting in empty riches, for emptiness will be their only reward.

Job 15:31

[Jesus said,] “When an evil spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, searching for rest. But when it finds none, it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds that its former home is all swept and in order. Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before.”

Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

A woman’s car coughs, sputters, and finally stops, miles from town—her gas tank is empty. A hiker, far from camp, swallows the last few drops of water from his canteen—there is nothing left. A husband buries his young wife, wondering how he can go on, how he can raise his little children by himself—his heart feels empty. When something is empty—a gas tank, canteen, printer cartridge, cereal box—it’s either not going to work or it’s not going to satisfy. But when someone is empty, motivation, meaning, and purpose are lost. There seems no reason to go on. Many things can cause you to feel empty—the death of a loved one, the end of a friendship, being ignored or rejected. These empty feelings all have one thing in common: some kind of loss. Loss empties your emotional tank. Your reserves are used up, and now you’re hungry and thirsty for something to fill and satisfy. This is the moment Satan’s been waiting for. He is always ready to move into an empty heart, to deceive you into thinking that what he offers can satisfy. But when your heart is filled with the love, truth, and goodness of God through the presence of the Holy Spirit, there is little room for evil to enter. It is only when you are filled with God’s Spirit that meaning, purpose, and satisfaction are restored.

Divine Promise

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
