How can I live my life in conversation with God?

A Moment with God

My God gave me the idea to call together all the nobles and leaders of the city, along with the ordinary citizens, for registration.

Nehemiah 7:5

Be careful that you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking. For if the people of Israel did not escape when they refused to listen to Moses, the earthly messenger, we will certainly not escape if we reject the One who speaks to us from heaven!

Hebrews 12:25

Nehemiah gave God credit for the idea of registering the people. This is different from the way some people say, “The Lord told me …” in order to support their plans or opinions. Rather, Nehemiah lived with a constant sense of God’s presence. His life was a moment-by-moment conversation with God, even as he pursued his energetic and ambitious agenda. How can you grow more aware of God’s speaking in your life? You might try a Post-it note on your computer to remind you to breathe a quick prayer whenever you sit down to work. Or set your cell phone alarm to sound every sixty minutes, and then take thirty seconds to review how the Lord has been with you the last hour and ask him to help you in the hour ahead. Take time to listen to God too. One-sided conversations are boring. When you take time to listen to God, your relationship grows. Spiritual growth is not hindered by God’s nonattendance but by your inattention. What are some other ways your life can become a moment-by-moment conversation with God?
