What is repentance? What happens when I repent?

A MOMENT with GOD

There is forgiveness of sins for all who repent.

Luke 24:47

Peter’s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, “Brothers, what should we do?” Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 2:37-38

Repent of your sins and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped away.

Acts 3:19

If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.

Have you ever had the experience of driving in an unfamiliar city and suddenly realizing that you were going the wrong way on a one-way street? What you do next is very much like the biblical idea of repentance—you make a U-turn and change your direction as fast as you can. Repentance is motivated by the realization that you have taken the wrong way in life. The Bible calls the wrong way sin. Repentance is admitting your sin and making a commitment, with God’s help, to change the direction of your life. While repentance is not a popular concept these days, it is essential because it is the only way to arrive at your desired destination—heaven. Repentance makes change possible so you can experience God’s fullest blessings, both now and for eternity. When you repent, it is a divine moment in which you decide to move toward God instead of away from him. Are you going in the right direction?
