What does it mean to love my enemies?

A MOMENT with GOD

You have heard the law that says, “Love your neighbor” and hate your enemy. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

Matthew 5:43-44

All of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

1 Peter 3:8-9

Showing love to your enemies seems completely unreasonable—unless you realize that you were once an enemy of God until he forgave you. When you love your enemy, you see that person as Jesus does—someone in need of grace and forgiveness. Getting to that point takes prayer. When you pray for others, you can’t help but feel compassion for them. If you respond with prayer and blessing instead of retaliation when someone hurts you, you will experience a divine moment of God’s blessing.

DIVINE PROMISE

If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. . . . Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.
