How can I be more productive?

They delight in the law of the Lord. . . . They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

A tree is identified by its fruit. . . . A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives.

Galatians 5:22

A branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.

John 15:4

Productivity is almost universally measured in numbers. How many widgets were produced? How many sold? How much profit was earned? We measure productivity, even in our personal lives, in quantitative, objective terms. How much have our houses gained in equity since we bought them? How many A’s do our children receive on their report cards? How many items did we cross off our to-do lists today? This view of productivity is fine and good, and it helps us evaluate work performance and personal achievement. But the Bible defines productivity not only in terms of numbers but in terms of relationships and character. Just like an apple can look good on the outside but actually be full of worms, so a person’s external appearance of goodness does not measure the authenticity of the heart. False pretenses of goodness or pretending to be spiritual actually shows a rotten core that cannot be productive. A godly heart is the key to true productivity, which means producing good deeds. When all is said and done, what you do for God is the only bottom line that really matters.
