Why is listening important?

My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your neck.

Proverbs 1:8-9

Listening helps you grow and mature. Listening fosters learning, which leads to knowledge and wisdom.

Oh, why didn’t I listen to my teachers? Why didn’t I pay attention to my instructors?

Listening helps keep you accountable. When you listen to good advice, you absorb it with your mind and your heart. It will come in handy at just the right time, when you are most vulnerable to temptation.

My child, listen to what I say . . . You will find the right way to go.

Listening to God is essential for making good decisions. When you truly listen to the Holy Spirit and to God’s commands, you will have the guidance you need to make wise choices.

God’s truth is found in God’s Word, but the application of it is often found by listening to the advice and experiences of others.
